Team USA came back from 0-3 and 6-9 deficits to defeat Australia 21-11 in a slugfest on Friday evening at Panamerican Stadium in Lagos de Moreno, Mexico. It was a good start for the offense of the defending champion at the IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship. Six runs in the third inning erased the first deficit. Seven combined in the fifth and sixth got them the lead for good. Seven more runs in the eighth ended it early due to ten-run rule.

Leadoff hitter and center fielder Austin Meadows led the way for Team USA, going 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles, four runs scored and six RBI. His bases clearing two-base hit capped the big rally in the eighth. Catcher Zach Collins drove in four. Riley Unroe and Keegan Thompson crossed the plate three times apiece. Overall ten different American players scored in the game.

Australia kept the pace early on, but couldn’t do much against the strong relief pitching of Team USA. First baseman Matthew Morris was up in front with three hits and four RBI. Second baseman Corey Lyon went 3-for-5 with three runs and a RBI out of the leadoff spot.

Both starting pitchers did get hit hard, even though both didn’t receive much help from their defenses in a wild game. The teams combined to commit 13 errors in the contest, eight alone by Australia. Jacob Jarvis (USA) surrendered seven hits, nine runs (6 ER) and two base on balls, lasting just two-plus innings. Chris Pelaez (W, 1-0) came in and shut down the Aussie offense, conceding just three hits and three walks in four scoreless innings of strong relief. Michael Gahan (AUS) was charged with eight hits, nine runs (2 ER) and four free passes in 4 1/3 frames. Bryce Collins (L, 0-1) took the loss.

While Team USA is having an off day on Saturday, Australia will return to Panamerican Stadium for another night game. They will square off with host Mexico at 7pm local time.
