Cassandra Sedgman, Thursday, 5 July 2012

The Austtralian Little League Team continued on their winning way at the 2012 Asia Pacific Little League Championships with a strong 8 - 4 finish over Indonesia

Coach Murray Kempton reported that after a slow start the team showed great determination to fight back and take their second win of the tournament.

GAME REPORT

Jed Hamburg was the starting pitcher for Australia.  He threw 2 1/3 innings for 46 pitches.  He was backed up by solid defence in the infield his contribution restricted a well drilled Indonesian team only giving up 2 runs.

Orlando La Rosa began pitching with the score at 2 to 0 in the 3rd inning. He battled through several Indonesian hitters successfully keeping them off balance allowing some breathing space for the Australian team to regroup and mount an offence.

Dawson Summers led off the bottom of the 3rd with a towering home run over centre field to score the first run of the game for Australia and the only run for the inning.

At the top of the 4th La Rosa gave a solid performance with one strike out and 2 PO's.  At the bottom of the 4th, lead off batter Max Dowling hit a home, run followed by a single from Tama Pihama.

At the bottom of the 5th Dawson Summers starts with a precise drag bunt down the 3rd base line for a single followed by Jackson Riley with a well placed sacrificed bunt allowing both players to reach 2nd and 1st base safely.  Zak Thompson was the next hitter who laid down another bunt that was brilliantly fielded by the Indonesian Pitcher before turning and throwing to 3rd for the PO of Dawson Summers. Jackson Riley stole 3rd base. The bases were loaded after the Indonesian Pitcher allows two walks bringing in one run leveling the score 3 to 3.  Then Tama Pihama puts Australia in the lead with an infield hit to Short Stop.  After a PB Australia was in the lead 5 to 3 and the Indonesian Relief Pitcher walked Byron Armstrong to load the bases again.  With loaded bases, 3rd Baseman Lincoln Kempton, with the count at 2 balls 2 strikes line drives to the right field alley for a double scoring 3 RBI's giving Australia an 8 to 3 lead.

In the top of the 6th after giving up one run to Indonesia from a walk and with loaded bases and 2 out Lincoln Kempton was given the ball and PO'd the last hitter to win the game.

The Australian Little League Team would like to thank the very vocal and passionate support throughout the game from their fans who did not stop supporting at any stage throughout the game despite the biting sun, humid conditions and frequent earth tremors.  Our team is in a good position to take on Thailand and Korea in the remaining two scheduled games to win a place in the first play-off game on Saturday 10am at Wan-Shou Stadium.
